About
Shaun Connell (b.1970) is a Black British photographer whose work centres on testimony. His practice explores memory, faith, presence and place through sustained encounters with people and communities across Black British life and the wider diaspora.
Working collaboratively, Connell’s process is grounded in presence, conversation, trust and ongoing research. His photographs emerge through shared time and attention, where everyday gestures and familiar spaces carry the weight of personal memory and collective history.
Rather than observing from a distance, he works with people, allowing images to form within relational space. Through this approach, his work reflects on how identity and belonging are lived, carried and recognised, often through the body and within the ordinary.
His work has been exhibited across the United Kingdom.
Connell is currently developing a long term archive of photographs and documentary studies made with communities across the North of England. Built through sustained engagement, the archive traces lives, relationships and environments over time, forming the foundation for a series of evolving projects.
Alongside this work, he is the founder of theBLKGZE, a platform dedicated to Black photographers across the diaspora. Through conversations, essays and curated work, the platform contributes to ongoing discussions around authorship, representation and the role of photography in shaping collective memory.
